[Street Food] - Eggettes & Food on a Stick

Street food is one of the most popular types of food in the Asian countries!

But what exactly is "street food"?
It's basically ready-to-eat food and drinks that are sold straight from a vendor on the streets or a small shop. Maru Global, the Philly based takoyaki shop, mentioned in the previous post (Click here to read!) is a great example of  a type of street food that can be found in Japan.

Sometimes these street vendors are seen as "hawkers" that aren't suppose to sell because they aren't inspected by the Health Department. Even if the vendors are inspected, some people still associate street food as unhealthy and unsafe food to consume (similar situations with lunch trucks). But, don't worry! The "street foods" this blog is about to introduce are completely safe and inspected by the Health Department!

Let's start with the Eggettes from Yummy Yummy.
Eggettes are similar to ball pancakes, except they are lighter and crisper. In Cantonese, eggettes are called "gai dan jai," and it is also known as egg waffles or egg puffs to others. Before this small shop opened, the closest eggettes to Philadelphia that I can find was from the street vendors of New York's Chinatown. However, about maybe a year or two ago, Yummy Yummy opened in our own Chinatown and sold the ever-so-popular eggettes!

They're made with egg, sugar, flour and light evaporated milk. At this shop, you can get them in original, green tea with white chocolate, chocolate, and chocolate oreo. The price ranges from $2-$3. They also sell other snacks such as taiyaki, curry fishball, green tea pudding, egg pudding (flan), and other various snacks. The beverages that I've seen them sell are: coffee, various soda, homemade soy milk, and iced green tea. Everything here is made by hand, and I believe it is a family-owned business!

Food on a Stick from Solo, the Skewer Bar ~
Have you ever brought food on a stick? This is another popular street food found in the Asian countries! They're very similar to kabobs, except they mostly contain cultural food from Asia or food cooked in an Asian-style.

At this small shop in Chinatown, you can find the skewers ranging from $3-6. There's quite a variety of skewers here: beef, chicken, fishball, squid, lamb and more! The food is cooked on the spot when ordered, so it might be a wait---just take this time to relax and check out their IKEA furniture!
